Hayen, Helmer share birthday

Dorothy Hayen and Ray Helmer share the same birthday, so Ray and Jamie joined Dorothy and John Saturday evening for cake. Leon Hayen spent several days this past week at the farm helping John with fence work and stayed nights with his sister, Marilyn Geis. Leon, Marilyn, Max and Donna Hayen, Brent and Paul Hayen, and Virginia Downing joined John and Dorothy at the Pizza Hut Saturday to celebrate Dorothy's 98th birthday. Afternoon callers at the Hayen home were June and Lois Jost, John Umburger, Howard and Beth Collett, Ray and Jamie Helmer, and Brent and Paula Hayen.

Irene Kreutzman has moved from September Apartments to Marion Manor. She was a student of Alvina Hoffman when Alvina taught at the Youngtown school. Pauline Edmunds took Alvina to the retired teachers' meeting Thursday at the senior center. Mary Beth Bowers presented her slide show on wild flowers at the meeting.

Luke Bowers brought home a first place wrestling award from the Strong City meet for middle school students this past Saturday. Rhonny and Mary Beth Bowers spent all day Saturday watching the wrestling events.

Leonard and Rosalie Klassen called on Andy and Bonnie Friesen and Vernon and Rachel Friesen in Hillsboro Thursday.

Weekend visitors at Jackie Hett's farm were Keith and Zach Unruh of Wichita, Melinda Helmer of Andover, and Melanie and Larry Ensey and Joel of Valley Center. Jackie was a Sunday dinner guest of the Ken Helmer family and she and Melinda went to a movie in the afternoon. They were celebrating their birthdays early because Melinda and Lauren are leaving this coming week on a trip to France.

Jackie Hett and Earlene Hague met at Earlene's home last week to make plans for the 57th reunion for Peabody High School to be held Memorial weekend.

Eileen Sieger hosted her Friday afternoon bridge club last week. Guests were Jean Case, Mary Kay Classen, Margaret Pickering, Lavonne Hannaford, Marion Crofoot, Dorothy Youk, Randee Loomis, and guest Louise Wood.

Eileen Sieger met her friend, Donna Ames, at the Wichita Garden Show. She reported that the orchid display was breath-taking, but she resisted and didn't bring home any new orchids.

Margaret Ireland and Jo Gearheart had lunch together Tuesday in Wichita.

Ron and Deb Navrat spent Sunday afternoon with Marie Navrat. Ashley Ratzloff stayed with her grandmother on Saturday.

Sarah and Rachel Davidson were in Topeka Monday and Tuesday of last week at the model United Nations. Sarah is busy practicing for the upcoming high school play, "Cheaper by the Dozen," that will be this weekend.

Vicki Smolik had supper Thursday evening with Paul and Kathy Swan.

Jeannine Bateman drove to Topeka Saturday and picked up Kristine. They continued on to Kansas City for a gem and mineral show.

Shirley and David Bowers had lunch with Ken and Anita Sly in Salina Saturday, then drove on to Colby for a surprise 50th birthday party for Russell Bowers. Other family members who came to wish him a happy birthday were Mary Lou and Rick Just and Kyle and Brian and Shelinda Bowers and Jordan.

Beth Collett invited Shirley Bowers to be her guest Monday evening at a Neo-Century Club at Eastmoor. Shirley played piano Friday at the World Day of Prayer service at Valley United Methodist church.

The potluck dinner at Hilltop Manor was canceled last Wednesday due to the ice. It was held this Tuesday.

Roseva McLinden and Richard and Patty McLinden went to Guthrie, Okla., Saturday to attend the Saturday night "Fine Timed Event" at the Lazy E Arena. They spent Saturday morning visiting Jim and Karen Link and Jay and Elizabeth Link. They returned home Sunday afternoon. Chuck and Lori McLinden went to Guthrie Friday and took in all four events, returning home Sunday afternoon. Lauren and Jarret spent the weekend with Kim and Mark Harms and family.

On Tuesday, Roseva McLinden attended the lesson, "Old Fashioned Baking," given by Nancy Phil at the city building.

Jo Gearheart and I have returned this Monday from Howard where we attended the funeral of our aunt, Mary Taylor.
