Mary Beth Bowers, who is known as the "Wheat Lady," at the middle school in Newton, presented a program on the process of growing wheat to it becoming a loaf of bread. She takes a head of wheat for each student and has homemade bread for everyone to taste. The students get to count the number of grains in their head and get to grind the wheat in a hand-powered grinder, in preparation for making bread. They learn the price of wheat and how many hands the wheat passes through from the farmers field to the grocery shelves. Mary Beth has taken this program to Gary Ewert's class for the last five years and he works this into a complete learning unit.
