He's the Marion County Record
When I was a small child at Ransom, the Farmers State Bank, to me, WAS Charlie (Charles) Shellenberger. He was actually the cashier, or president, or vice president, I'm not sure which.
If I was at a musical performance or a play, with my parents, I would sing out, "There goes the Farmers State Bank," whenever Mr. Shellenberger entered the room. At the age of three or four, I just didn't understand that he wasn't "the bank."
I think it's a literary term or device they call synecdoche — where a part is made to stand for the whole, the entirety. As when you say "sails" and you really mean "ships" or "vessels." Or calling your car your wheels.
But of course, I had no literary studies "under my belt" at that time.
Anyway, if anyone "is" the Marion County Record, it's Bill Meyer. His imprimatur is on it, after 55 years. It's his baby, his newspaper, in more than just the ownership sense.
He has spent virtually his entire professional life trying to bring Marion and Marion County a really good newspaper. And he's succeeded, I think. And you need not take my word for it.
Meyer has won lots of awards, state, national, and international. He's recognized as a great newspaperman just about everywhere.
Keep on supporting Bill and the Marion County Record by buying (subscribing to) it, reading it, advertising in it, and cluing in the news staff when you know of a story.
You'll be glad you did.
