Healty Fit meeting is Monday

Diabetes management, prevention is topic

The next group meeting for The Healthy Fit project will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Marion City Building basement.

Guest speaker Debbie Hinnen, diabetic educator at Via Christi, will address the topic, "Diabetes Management and Prevention."

She will discuss management, prevention, medications, new "gadgets and gizmos," standards of care and goals for glucose, lipids, and blood pressure.

There are 20.1 million people in the United States, ages 40 to 74, who have pre-diabetes. Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have "pre-diabetes," blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes increases an individual's risk for many serious complications including heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, and kidney damage. Some diabetes symptoms include frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability, and blurry vision.

The good news is recent studies show people with pre-diabetes can prevent type 2 diabetes by making changes in their diet and increasing their level of physical activity.
