Teeny Williams of Marion spent five years crewel embroidering a bedspread in the 1970s.
Planning to pass it down to her granddaughter as a family heirloom, she put it away. But when she learned St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary was looking for a fund-raising project, she decided to donate it for that purpose.
"I'm happy about it because I really believe in working to help the hospital," she said.
About five years ago, she underwent open-heart surgery in Wichita and appreciated the good care she received. After undergoing several more surgeries within three years, including two for ovarian cancer, her appreciation grew for services provided by hospitals.
She especially appreciates the convenience of appointments with cardiologist Dr. Charles Beck at St. Luke.
"I knew if I got better, I wanted to join the auxiliary and help the hospital," she said. "Donating the bedspread was just the thing to do."
Williams hopes many people will use this opportunity to support the hospital.
The bedspread will be given to a lucky winner in a drawing Thursday during the annual St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary dinner.
The bedspread is on display in the lobby of St. Luke Hospital. Chances may be purchased at the front desk.
