Henry Schill
Henry A. Schill, 86, was born Dec. 30, 1915, to Fred and Marie Willert Schill at Aulne. He died Feb. 28, 2002, at St. Luke Hospital, Marion.
He was the ninth of 10 children born to Fred and Marie Schill. Two children died in infancy in Germany. The other seven — Fritz, John, Julia, Ann, Andy, August, and Gertrude, also preceded him in death.
Schill attended school in Aulne and graduated from high school in 1931.
He entered military service in November 1941 and served at Normandy and throughout the European theater as a motorcyclist. He received a purple heart and a good conduct medal as well as an American Defense Service Ribbon. He received an honorable discharge in 1944.
He married Ella Leona Ladd in 1942. She died in 1991.
Henry was employed by Beachner Construction Co. and he traveled throughout Kansas building roads and bridges. He retired from Beachner when he was 69. He returned to the Marion area where he enjoyed fishing and working outside.
In 1999 he met Barbara Smith, his companion until his death.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Edna Schill of Peabody; nieces, Delores Cook of Newton, Barbara Cheever of Salina, Betty Loney of Bristow, Okla., Cheryl Linn and Ruby Smith, both of Wichita, and Mary Wanser of Pennsylvania; his nephews Howard Smith of Winfield and Ronnie Schill of Leon, and many great-nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services were held Monday morning at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. The Rev. Mr. Tom Loney officiated. Burial was at Claney Cemetery, rural Marion.
