Herb Bredemeier

Herbert L. Bredemeier, 95, died May 29, 2003, at Marion Manor.

Born June 12, 1907, at Antelope, he was the son of John Henry and Lillian (Dody) Bredemeier.

He grew up near Antelope on a farm, one of eight children. At the age of 12 his parents and one sister died of the flu epidemic in 1919. He and his siblings were raised by grandparents and other relatives. On June 12, 1929, he married Clara Hammer at Emporia. Two children were born, Dick and Laura.

In Herb's early years he helped lay the bricks in the streets of Marion and construct the picnic areas at Marion County Lake and some of the rural concrete bridges in the Marion County area. He and Clara moved to Marion in 1954 where Herb continued carpentry work, for which he was most known, until three years ago when he fell and broke both hips. He then entered Marion Manor.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Richard and William Bredemeier and a half brother, Arch Dody; four sisters, Mabel and Eleanor Bredemeier, Ethel Hawthorn, and Evelyn Stage; and one grandchild.

Survivors include his wife Clara of Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Evelyn Bredemeier of Marion; daughter, Laura Bredemeier of Petaluma, Calif.; sister Elsie Coleman of Wichita; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The service was held Saturday morning at Valley United Methodist Church in Marion. The officiant was Janet Weathersbee. The vocalist was Greg Carlson with Burton Tidwell as the organist.

Casketbearers were Michael, Dori, James, Jeffery, Jake, and Janessa Bredemeier.

Interment was at Marion Cemetery.

Memorials were established with Valley United Methodist Church and Marion Manor.
