Herb Wullschleger
Herbert Carl Theodore Wullschleger, 98, was born May 14, 1903, in Holland, Ind., the son of the Rev. Gustave and Elizabeth (Schaub) Wullschleger. He was the 14th of 16 children.
His childhood was spent living and attending school in many communities and his formal education ended with graduation from the eighth grade.
Herbert married Pauline Mooso Oct. 11, 1921, in Newton. They had three children, Herbert, George, and Josephine.
The couple lived in Wichita where Herb was first employed as a printer. He worked as a linotype compositor for the Wichita Eagle for 40 years and was editor of the Little River Monitor from 1945 to 1950. He was mayor of Little River in 1946. In 1949, the couple moved back to Wichita where Herb resumed his job with the Eagle.
The Wullschlegers lived at Marion County Lake for 23 years and helped start Marion Senior Center.
Herbert was a member of Eastmoor United Methodist Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member for 50 years. He also was a member of the Typographical Union, Marion County Planning Commission, and the Marion County Lake Planning Committee. He was a member and past president of the Marion Kiwanis Club, Chat & Dine Club, and the Marion Senior Center. The Wullschlegers were members of the Western Airs square dance club of Wichita for 20 years. He and his wife were the oldest of three generations of dancers in the organization.
He died Jan. 27, 2002, at Marion Manor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Pauline; one son, Herbert; five brothers; six sisters; and one granddaughter, Mary Jo Trower.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, George and Peggy Wullschleger of Wareham, Mass.; daughter, Josephine Elling of Marion; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Wullschleger of Wichita; sister, Irene Boggs of New Salem, N.D.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday morning at Eastmoor United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Goering officiating. Vocal music was provided by Greg Carlson with Burton Tidwel, organist.
Marion Kiwanians serving as casket bearers were Larry Loomis, Greg Carlson, Rosse Case, Leland Heidebrecht, Ken Vinduska, and Dennis Nichols.
Burial was in Marion Cemetery.
Two memorial funds have been established, one with Eastmoor United Methodist Church music department and the other with Marion Senior Center.
