Hett qualifies for state golf tournament
Travis Hett, 13-year-old son of Aaron and Lanell Hett, Marion, has qualified to participate in a state golf tournament.
Travis, an eighth grader at Marion Middle School, has been a member of the Kansas Junior Golf Association since he was 10 years old.
He plays in the North Central section, one of five in the state.
Travis competed in four competitions this summer. With a score of 84, he received a second-place medal June 13 at the Stagg Hill Golf Course in Manhattan. He placed third June 26 at the Salina Country Club with a score of 80.
The other competitions were played at Salina Municipal Golf Course and Hesston Golf Course.
After each competition, the five top placers in each age division were awarded points. Travis's total points placed him in the top four in the 12- to 13-year-old division, qualifying him to participate in the state tournament.
Travis's mother said he practices every spare moment at Marion Country Club and is excited about competing with other top players.
He is one of an 18-member team (from five age divisions including 11 and under to 18) which will compete July 10-12 in the KJGA Section Team Championship at Mariah Hills Golf Course at Dodge City.
Junior match play involving the top 16 players in the state will follow immediately after the team competition. Winners will comprise the eight-member 2002 Kansas Junior Cup Team which will compete with a Nebraska team in August.
The top scorer among the junior cup team members will be named "Junior Player of the Year."
