Hetts finish first, third at CG Invitational

Marion High School standout golfer Nickolas Hett may be finding his stroke, and his younger brother is doing his best impression of finding the same success. Nickolas, a senior at Marion, and his brother Travis, a freshman, finished first and third April 19 at the Council Grove Invitational golf tournament. The team brought home a second-place finish overall and second place in the four-man competition. Junior Nick Carlson also was a major factor in the team's overall success. Carlson, Travis, and Nickolas shot an 80, 76, and 75 respectively to lead the way for the Warriors on the Braves' soil.

"Nickolas, Travis, and Nick are beginning to play with more confidence each time out," head coach Doug Dick said about the trio. "Council Grove's tournament has always been a challenge for us and we have not done well there in the past. The course is tight with many hills and blind shots. A big factor (in our performance) is that Council Grove has a very good team and is extremely tough on their home course. To play close to them and give them a challenge gave us a lot of confidence as a team. Even though we didn't take home first as a team, I was very pleased with our performance."

Joe Svitak finished 14th, shooting an 89. Trevor Jones shot a 92, while junior counterpart John Whitwell shot a 97. According to Dick, the team is making important strides.

"Joe Svitak, Trevor Jones, and John Whitwell are making great progress," Dick said. "Keeping focused each practice is very important over the next couple of weeks. It is what will get us to state as a team this year. We have the talent and the potential, but each day we must continue to improve."
