Hillsboro victorious for second year in a row
Old rivals hooked up again Sept. 11 and 12 in the Bruce/Crofoot Challenge Cup at Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course.
The Hillsboro team, led by captain Doug Dick, defeated the Marion team in a close match.
On Saturday each team divided into pairs and challenged pairs from the opposing town. Each match was worth three points. One point for the best front nine holes, one point for the best back nine, and another for best overall score.
Hillsboro led 15-12 after the morning session, led by pairs Dick and Brice Foth, Ken Johnson and Dave Watson, and Russ Cain and Scott O'Hare.
Marion battled back in the afternoon session, with a 15-12 victory of its own. Pairs Don Noller and Jeff Goering, Tim Young and Tod Gordon, and Dave Shiplet and Jerry Hess all swept their opponents, 3-0.
Sunday featured the singles competition. Pairing was based on handicap, and the same three-point format as the doubles competition was used.
Hillsboro took home the cup for the second year in a row with a 32-22 victory. Dale Franz, Carl Long, John Knaak Jr., Andy Friesen, Jerry Dorsey, and Cain all swept their opponents, 3-0.
"It's fun competition between the two communities and two golf clubs," Dick said. "Members look forward to trying to qualify. Both clubs have good golfers and you never know who will make it."
Next year Marion Country Club will host the event.
