Historian wants to erect monument of Marion native

A baseball historian wants to memorialize Marion native and New York Giants baseball player Charles "Victory" Faust with a monument in Marion.

Marion City Administrator David Mayfield told the council during Monday's meeting that David Stalker of Watertown, Wis., currently is working on a series of monuments of baseball players during baseball's Deadball Era (1901-1919). Faust pitched games during the 1911 National League Championship.

Stalker had contacted the city, via e-mail, regarding the monument. He said he wanted to donate a monument to be erected in a park, museum, or baseball field.

Faust's portrait will be etched in stone with a short biography with an engraved baseball. It will be 24 inches wide and three feet tall.

Mayfield suggested Marion Recreation Commission be asked for input regarding an appropriate location at the baseball complex.

Anyone wanting to contribute to the memorial should contact Mayfield at the city office.

— Former city customers who did not pay their bills now will be sent to the state send-off list. Whenever an individual is to receive a tax refund or lottery winnings, the state will check the list and retain what is owed to the city.

City clerk Angela Lange said the state will charge 24 percent if the state does the research or 18 percent if the city provides information.

— The council entered a 20-minute executive session for attorney-client privilege. Economic development director Jami Williams and Mayfield were in attendance with the council and Baldwin.

A special city council meeting has tentatively been planned for 1 p.m. Monday in the city building. The agenda will be to discuss the construction of a speculative building at the city's industrial park.

The next regular council meeting is at 5:30 p.m. April 9.
