Homecoming is climax of MHS Spirit Week

The crowning of Marion High School's new homecoming king and queen before Friday night's football game against Haven is the marquee event among a whole host of fun activities that have come to make up the annual MHS Spirit Week.

Monday students arrived at school in pajamas, the first of five themed dress-up days that include "puttin' on the ritz," and "toga day."

The student-council-sponsored "Battle of the Classes" kicked off Monday as well. Seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen compete against each other in fun events to earn points that could lead to a pizza party at the end of the week for the winners, according to student council rep Brett Billings.

First-year student council sponsor Kevin Moler has been impressed with the way his charges have organized the week.

"The kids have really taken control of this," he said. He noted that the activities provided a good opportunity for students to interact with different people and in different ways, and allows them the chance to "cut loose" at school in a way that's fun.

Thursday evening at 8:30 students and fans will gather at Warrior Stadium for the "Burning of the Dummy" bonfire rally. Homecoming candidates will participate against each other in various silly games.

"Thursday night's games will be the messy ones," said MHS cheerleader sponsor Lana Fahey. "They're fun to watch."

Friday afternoon at 2:45 the Warrior cheerleaders will lead a pep rally downtown in the vacant lot next to Duckwall's. There will be a final "Battle of the Classes" event that will determine the winner of the Spirit Stick award. The MHS band will add to the festive atmosphere.

Homecoming candidates will learn which king and queen candidates will have to kiss a llama, the reward for receiving the most donations in a student council fund raiser.

"We'd love to have community support at both the bonfire and the pep rally," said Fahey. "Patrons, business people, community members — everyone is welcome."

Football fans can head to Warrior Stadium early Friday evening for a tailgate party from 5 to 7 sponsored by the MHS Booster Club. Dinner will be available for $4.

The crowning of the homecoming king and queen will commence at 6:15 p.m., and Spirit Week festivities conclude following the football game with the homecoming dance in the MHS commons area.
