Hospital board names new CEO

Marion Hospital District #1 has hired a new chief executive officer for St. Luke Hospital and Living Center.

Tom Smith of Ft. Benning, Ga., was offered the position by the board following an executive session Thursday.

Quorum Health Resources, the management company for the hospital, recommended the board interview three candidates, chosen by Quorum, with Smith being one of them.

Smith is a career serviceman, serving 20 years in the U.S. Army. He holds bachelor of arts and master of health administration degrees.

The current administrator at Martin Army Community Hospital at Ft. Benning, Lt. Col. Smith is responsible for the operation of a 73-bed hospital, outpatient facilities, family practice residency program, and three clinics.

Previously he served as hospital administrator at Ft. Ruck, Ala., and Vicenza, Italy.

Smith and his wife have six children and soon will relocate to Marion. He will start at the hospital Oct. 1, the day Banner HealthSystems will discontinue management and operation services.
