Hospital gazebo is memorial to Chaput
A new, welcoming gazebo has been constructed between St. Luke Medical Clinic and St. Luke Hospital. It was built in memory of Doris Chaput, who worked as patient accountant at the clinic and died in August 2002 after a two-year battle with cancer.
Her memorial fund was designated for the clinic. Doris's husband, Gary, and clinic employees headed by Tammy Snelling decided on the gazebo as a way to use the money.
Other contributions were provided by doctors, clinic and hospital employees, community members, and friends of the Chaputs.
Gary Chaput said the people of the community were so supportive and giving when his wife died that he and his family wanted to do something special for them.
He said his wife loved the outdoors and always wanted a gazebo in her backyard, and this one can be viewed from the office in which she worked.
Chaput plans to erect a memorial plaque at the site. Flower beds will be established around the gazebo to make it even more attractive.
"We thought this would be a nice thing to give back to the community," he said. "We hope it will give people peace."
The alcove is handicapped-accessible and is envisioned as a place where patients and visitors can relax and enjoy the outdoors.
