How to enjoy Chingawassa Days

Enjoying Chingawassa Days is easy to do, since there will be so many activities taking place. It just requires a little patience and preparation.

DOGS, BICYCLES, ETC., SHOULD STAY HOME. Lots of people of all ages are walking in the park. Anything that requires a leash shouldn't be in the park. Bicycles, skateboards, and inline skates also pose a hazard to events and to riders. Exceptions are made for baby strollers, but only if a baby is in the immediate area.

WITHER WEATHER. A rainstorm might blow through, though most weather forecasts indicate a clear weekend. There's no sin in leaving a jacket in the car. If it's sunny, bring a hat and sunscreen for yourself and the little ones. Lawn chairs will help avoid damp grass or the occasional dropped package of popcorn.

DANCING AND CHEERING ALLOWED. A number of musical acts will perform this year, from the Marion High School jazz band to 38 Special. All of them like a responsive crowd that claps, taps their toes, air guitars, and cheers at the end of the songs. Acts respond to a happy crowd. Please note, however, that those around you probably want to hear the band sing, no matter how great is your version of "Caught Up In You." If you're that good, sign up for the karaoke contest and live out your fantasy there.

RELAX. Stuff happens when this many activities are crammed into a weekend. Don't sweat the small stuff. Keep a positive attitude.

PEOPLE WATCH. Observing a diverse crowd is a great deal of fun, as long as you don't point and laugh. If people in staff T-shirts are staring at you, it is because you are either A) terribly attractive, or B) we're trying to see your button. Don't think that just because you are terribly attractive that you won't be politely accosted if you don't wear a button.

PARKING SPACES. Parking anywhere that is legal is allowed, but a few areas will be marked off for handicapped parking, drop off/pick up zone, or special events such as parachutists and bed races. After those events are over, those areas will be available for parking. But if you live within walking distance, why not walk?

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS. The folks in the staff T-shirts may look a little grumpy, but they are interested in your opinions. What did you like? What might work better? Suggestions are taken more seriously than people may realize.

DON'T PANIC. A special committee has been panicking for months now. You can leave it up to them.
