Irene Riffel

Irene E. Riffel, 86, Herington, died April 22, 2002, at the Mercy Health Center, Manhattan.

Born July 7, 1915, near Lost Springs, she was the daughter of Frederick and Katherine (Bernhardt) Hanschu.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Herington, with the Rev. K.C. Dehning officiating. Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Donahue Funeral Home, Herington. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

She was a homemaker and graduated from Ramona High School with the class of 1933.

Riffel married Sylvester P. "Pete" Riffel Nov. 15, 1936, in her parents' home near Lost Springs and they lived most of their lives in the Woodbine community. He died Dec. 4, 2000. She also was preceded by a brother, Alvin Hanschu; three sisters, Alma Riffel, Carrie Buxman, and Frieda Bernhardt; and her parents.

Survivors include a son Larry Riffel and wife Mary Jane of Junction City; two daughters, Kathleen Ludden and husband Howard of Omaha, and Sheryl Coup and husband Curtis of Hays; two brothers, Ted Hanschu of Marion and Leonard Hanschu of Harlingen, Texas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials have been requested to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or Parkview Assisted Living, Herington.
