Ivan Shields

Ivan J. (Tiny) Shields, 80, Glendale, Ariz., died Dec. 5, 2001, at Glencroft Care Center.

Born April 20, 1921, near Lincolnville, he was the son of Martin and Augusta Shields. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

He was a graduate of Lincoln- ville High School and attended college at Emporia.

He married Laura Waterman Feb. 15, 1943, at Peabody. Two days later he was in the U.S. Air Force and served as a radar instructor. He was discharged as a sergeant and returned to college in Emporia, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1947 and his master's degree in 1949. He attended the University of Kansas at Lawrence and in 1952 received a Ph.D. in plant pathology.

He moved his family to Tempe, Ariz., to take a job as extension specialist in plant pathology. In 1963, he became agent of Maricopa County extension programs. He retired in 1983 to accept an appointment to the Arizona Commission of Agriculture, retiring in 1991.

He was associated with Toastmasters International, serving every office position. He was instrumental in developing Lutheran Camp Aloma, helped develop Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Tempe, and was a member until he and his wife moved to Glendale in 1995. He then transferred his membership to Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Phoenix. He also held various offices at Glencroft Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in an automobile accident in 1996.

Survivors include his children, Jana of Long Beach, Calif., Willa of Phoenix, Ariz., and Elson of Dryden, N.Y.; brothers, Fred Shields of Lincolnville and Emerson Shields of St. John; and two grandchildren, Chenoa and Keegan Shields of New York.

Memorial services were held Dec. 16 at Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Phoenix. Military services were held Dec. 17 at the National Memorial Cemetery in North Phoenix. A memorial service also was held at Glencroft Retirement Center that evening.
