Jack Anderson

John H. "Jack" Anderson, 79, formerly of Ramona, died July 6, 2003, at Clay County Medical Center, Clay Center.

The son of the late Grover and Eva (Brunner) Anderson, he was born March 10, 1924, at Chapman.

Following graduation from Ramona High School in 1941 he attended Kansas State University.

He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 24, 1943, until Dec. 7, 1945, in the field artillery seeing action during combat in Europe. He earned five bronze battle stars: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.

Among other awards, he received the Bronze Star award and an oak leaf cluster for the second award of the same medal.

Following military duty he served as postmaster at Ramona from 1947.

He was married to Madeline "Mattie" Mastek on May 3, 1948, at Tampa.

In 1957 he was transferred to Valley Center where he was appointed assistant postmaster. He was named postmaster at Valley Center in 1959. In 1974 the family moved to Clay Center and he served as postmaster at Linn until he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1979.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center, Kansas Chapter of Postal Supervisors, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Legion, Lions Club, and was a past president of the Head Start board.

Preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Patricia, he is survived by his wife, Madeline, of Clay Center; sons, Tom and his wife Sheila, Marion, Scott and his wife Monica, Clay Center, Terry and his wife Dianna, Hutchinson; daughter, Jaclyn Reish, Topeka; sister, Joyce White, Indianapolis, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Services were conducted today, Wednesday, by Pastors Eugene Hicks and Clark Davis at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ramona, with burial in Lewis Cemetery at Ramona.

A memorial fund has been established in his name. It will be designated later by the family.
