Jack Swain
Jack Ronald Swain, 80, of Marion, died Dec. 31, 2007.
Born Dec. 8, 1927, at Oklahoma City, Okla., he was the son of Blaine and Retta (Kuhn) Swain.
He joined the Navy in 1944, and near the end of World War II, he joined the Army.
After returning home, he followed in his father's footsteps and chose a career as a bricklayer.
On May 23, 1952, he married his wife, Ella.
He attended college at Emporia State University and Wichita State University, where he earned a master's degree in social anthropology.
Jack taught sociology at Emporia State University for three years, and soon continued his bricklaying career during the day and taught college courses in the evenings. He taught for 10 years at North Harris County Community College, Houston, Texas.
Upon retirement, he moved back to Marion, where he was busy and involved in the community.
He was a volunteer for the American Legion post, placing flags on veterans' graves for Memorial Day services and worked at Marion Historical Museum for the past eight years.
Survivors include his wife, Ella of Marion; two daughters, Cynthia Blount of Marion and Cecile Parker of Bella Vista, Ark.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Thursday afternoon at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. Burial was in Marion Cemetery.
Memorial funds have been established with the Fisher House Foundation or Marion Historical Museum.
