Jeffrey brings home state medal

Marion Junior Warrior Wrestler Colton Jeffrey won four of six matches Saturday at the state wrestling meet in Topeka and took home a fourth-place medal.

Jeffrey, who wrestled in the 52-pound weight class in the 10- and under group, qualified for nationals April 8-9 in Iowa.

During the Junior Warrior regular season Jeffrey was 6-7. He finished 1-1 at sub-state, taking second place. He then won two of three matches at district giving him another second place finish and the right to compete in the state tournament.

The sixth grade Marion Elementary School student placed fifth at the state tournament in 2004 as an eight-year-old. This year, after winning his first match Saturday 7-0, he was pinned in his second match. The loss dropped him into the consolation bracket where he had to fight his way back to the medal round by winning three straight matches, 16-3, 4-3, and 5-2. He was pinned in his final match of the tournament, but still earned the fourth-place trophy.

He will wrestle in the 60-pound weight class at nationals.

Junior Warrior Evan Slater also qualified for the state tournament but did not place.

Jeffrey is the son of Mike and Diane Jeffrey of Marion.
