Jo Elling

Josephine "Jo" (Wullschleger) Elling, 84, Marion, died June 5, 2002, at Wichita.

Born Feb. 9, 1918, at Wichita, she was the daughter of Herbert and Pauline (Mooso) Wullschleger.

She grew up in Wichita and graduated from East High School in 1937. During her high school years she met Harry McKean during a football game with rival North High School. They were married in 1938 and lived in Wichita.

They operated McKean Upholstery Shop on South Broadway and raised three children. The family belonged to West Side United Methodist Church. They were active dancers in the Westernaires Square Dance Club.

In the late 1950s they began building their retirement home at Marion County Lake, and moved there in the 1970s. They continued their upholstery business. He died in 1979.

In 1983 she was married to Carl Elling at Marion and the couple was active in the Presbyterian Church. After eight years of marriage to Jo, he died in 1981.

From 1997 she lived with her companion Ed Broz at Marion. He died in early 2002.

Services were held Saturday morning at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion, with the Rev. John Goering and the Rev. Robert Priest officiating. Greg Carlson was vocalist and Anita Brookens the organist.

Casket bearers were Mark V. Tajchman, Leland Heidebrecht, Dan Somer, Kenneth Vinduska, Larry D. Loomis, and Dewayne Schmidt.

Burial was in Marion Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Marion Manor, Hynes Memorial Hospice.
