In 1984 he joined the Kansas Air Guard. He was selected for a position with 190th AGR security forces in 1985 and promoted to master sergeant.
He was selected as security forces superintendent in 1997 and promoted to senior master sergeant in March of 2000. In May of that year he took over duties as security forces manager.
