JV finishes second at home tournament

Marion High School junior varsity volleyball team finished a successful week Saturday as it hosted an eight-team tournament.

MHS finished second in the tournament, ending the day 4-1. Junior Emalee Versch was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and Erin Carr was named to the all-tournament team.

The Warriors were victorious 2-0 in four straight matches to reach the championship match.

They defeated Centre in the opening match, 25-12 and 25-15. The team was perfect on all 39 of its sets and sophomore Erin Richmond was 20-20.

The second match was even easier for Marion as they defeated Herington, 25-12 and 25-10. Kari Tajchman was 4-4 on hits, Richmond was 3-3, and Versch 7-8.

The final round robin match for MHS proved a little harder, but the Warriors took care of Nickerson, 25-18 and 25-17.

Jandee Sharp and Tajchman led the team with good serving and defense. Sharp was a perfect 7-7 serving and Tajchman 5-5. Both players had six digs each.

Marion faced stiffer competition in the semifinal match against the Abilene Cowgirls. Trailing 16-9 in the first game, Marion came back to win 25-23. The second game was close as well with Marion coming out on top 25-22.

Richmond was 48-49 setting, and Versch and Erin Carr finished 15-16 hitting.

MHS finally met its match in the championship round, losing to Remington, 25-21 and 25-18.

Richmond continued to set well, finishing 36-37 on sets. Carr was perfect on all 18 hitting attempts, and Tajchman led the team with nine digs.

Overall the Warriors finished 96 percent on sets, 87 percent on hits, and 91 percent on serves. Carr and Adrienne Chamberland led the team with a 93 percent hitting percentage.

On Oct. 5 the Warriors defeated Hillsboro in a league duel, 17-25, 25-6, and 25-11.

The 5-1 week raised the team's record to 9-6 overall.
