Karl Vanek
Karl Vanek, 94, died Oct. 21, 2002, at Marion Manor. Born May 29, 1908, on a farm in Riley County, he was the six of seven children of the late John and Mary (Cleborad) Vanek. His parents were Bohemian, immigrating from Czechoslovakia.
He attended rural schools and grew up in the Garrison community. He farmed in the community on land which became part of Tuttle Creek Reservoir.
He and Wilma Kjellin were married May 29, 1944. She died June 9, 1958.
He purchased land southeast of Marion in 1959 and after a flood in 1960 moved there to be near the Charles Kjellin family. His late wife and Charles were siblings.
When he moved to Marion he purchased a part of the farm owned by Thelma Skinner and rented her pasture. She lived at Burlington. They were married Dec. 22, 1962, at Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion. She died Feb. 24, 1994.
He was witty, well informed, and enjoyed being teased. He also was generous and loving.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, five brothers and one sister. Survivors include his brother-in-law, Charles Kjellin of Marion; his sister-in-law Lucile Vanek of Miltonville; two nephews; and four nieces.
His funeral service was held Saturday morning at Eastmoor UM church with burial in Carnahan Creek Cemetery, near Oldsburg. The Rev. John Goering officiated. Vocal music was by Doug Kjellin accompanied by Bob Brookens at the organ. Casket bearers were Doug Kjellin, Delbert Vanek, Greg Bowers, Ed Stringer, Daryl Enos, and Mick Summervill. Memorials may be left with the church.
