KC man leads officers on long chase
At approximately 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, a Marion County dispatcher got a call from someone on a cell phone who said they had followed a Camaro which was traveling erratically all the way from Hillsboro to Marion.
The dispatcher notified Marion Police Department and Officer Robert Soyez met the vehicle at Lincoln and Main. As Soyez turned around, the driver went up North Cedar Street, driving at legal speed, then east on Lawrence and tried to elude the officer by going around the city shop buildings.
When he was unsuccessful, he went west on Lawrence and turned right at Cedar Street without stopping.
At that point, he picked up speed and Soyez turned on his lights.
The driver proceeded north of U.S.-56 on Sunrise Road, then turned right on 260th, going into the ditch and out again.
At this point, Officer M.Dean Keyes joined Soyez in the chase. After missing several turns on the back road into Antelope, the man ended up in the ditch. When Officer Soyez came alongside, he attempted to broadside the police car.
When the man came to the railroad tracks, he followed them south to 250th, but railroad workers were blocking the crossing at 250th, and a farmer had blocked the road west with a truck, so he had no choice but to go straight ahead. He went into a bean field, then a ravine, where he jumped out of his vehicle.
Officers secured the area and waited until help arrived before searching for and arresting the man.
Besides Soyez and Keyes, Chief David Mayfield also was at the scene. Deputies Ken Jones, Rollin Schmidt, and Jeff Soyez from Marion County Sheriff's Department assisted in the arrest, as well as Dan Kinning and David Funk from the Hillsboro Police Department.
Soyez said they discovered that the man's car had a broken steering wheel and he had been using a rachet wrench to maneuver.
The man was identified as Frank Romen Camren, 26, of Kansas City, Mo. He resides at Marion County Jail. Soyez said an investigation revealed he has a record of numerous offenses.
