Kiwanis Governor Leakey pays official visit to Marion
The Marion Kiwanis Club hosted the annual Kiwanis governor's visit Nov. 17 at Eastmoor United Methodist church.
Sixty Kiwanians from nine clubs attended the meeting with Kansas Kiwanis Governor Dorothy Leakey, Berryton, as the keynote speaker.
Mickey Lundy, Marion Kiwanis president, opened the meeting with Feebie Holdeman, Marion, the Division V lieutenant governor, presiding. Members from the Council Grove, Emporia Hi-Noon, Emporia Evening, Herington, Hillsboro, Lindsborg, Marion, McPherson Light Capital, and McPherson Noon Kiwanis clubs were in attendance. Also in attendance were members of the newly organized Marion Key Club.
Attending club representatives gave reports of their service projects and activities. Dick Bills, Kansas coordinator for the worldwide service project, reported that over $60 million has been collected nationwide for the Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) project with the nationwide goal of $75 million yet to be achieved.
Bills is a member of Old Mission Kiwanis Club. Other dignitaries who gave reports included Marc Potter, Kansas governor elect 2003-2004 and member of the Kansas City West Kiwanis Club; Ken Kern, Kansas district secretary and member of the Osage City Kiwanis Club; and Christie Carroll, Division V Key Club lieutenant governor and member of the Council Grove Key Club. Also in attendance was Don Leakey, husband of Governor Leakey, Berryton Kiwanis Club.
Governor Leakey encouraged Kiwanians to continue serving with humility, recruit new members, retain current members, and to build new clubs.
"Winning with Kiwanis" was the theme used by the Marion club in decorating the tables and meeting room with checkered flags, race cars, and other pageantry associated with Indianapolis, the location of the 2003 International Kiwanis Convention. Refreshments were served by Terry Klenda, Lincolnville.
Marion Kiwanians in attendance were: Feebie Holdeman, Mickey Lundy, Tom Kimbrel, Susan Cooper, Gene Winkler, Brad Hansen, Pauline Holub, Greg Bowers, Roger Hannaford, Bud Hannaford, Marlin Buchholz, Dr. E.K. Schroeder, and Dick Schwartz. Marion Key Club member Misti Richmond and Marion Key Club sponsor Roger Schwab also were in attendance.
