Kreutziger featured in Wichita Eagle
A full-blown picture of Warren Kreutziger aboard his boat took center stage on the front page of the Outdoors section of the July 21 Wichita Eagle. He was assisting a young fisherman with a freshly-caught catfish.
Kreutziger, owner of Canada Bait and Tackle, also is a fishing guide. He was featured for his special way of attracting catfish, known as chumming.
Mixtures of water and grain in five-gallon buckets are allowed to ferment. Then, when Kreutziger takes his clients to special fishing spots on Marion Reservoir and drops anchor, he dumps the mixture around the boat.
He helps his passengers with bait and hook, and it usually doesn't take long for them to get a bite.
After a while, he moves to a new spot.
"You could probably go about anywhere on this lake and start catching fish before too long," he said. "I like to drop the chum right in the middle of a good break or some other kind of structure like standing timber or brush."
He said fishing improves for three or four days after chum has been deposited.
"Chumming is no guarantee," he said, "but it ups the odds."
Kreutziger has been fishing in Marion Reservoir ever since it was created. He's been a fishing guide since 1998.
He takes people out on the lake in early morning, and again in late afternoon. The average catch for a four or five-hour run is about seven per person, but taking the limit of 10 per person isn't unusual, he said.
The catfish season runs from the end of June or first part of July through October. July and August are Kreutziger's busiest months.
