L.Dena Goertz was all smiles during her last day of work at Marion's Hilltop Manor.
After serving 19 years as activity director at the senior living facility, Goertz decided the final day of 2003 was as good a time as any to retire.
"It's time," L.Dena said simply.
L.Dena was the guest of honor during a retirement reception held from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 31 in the activity room at Hilltop Manor.
In appreciation for her years of service, L.Dena received a sweatshirt emblazoned with the motto, "Blessed be the Piece Maker," in honor of her work with the manor's quilting group.
She also received a book, "What I Learned from God while Quilting," as well as a centerpiece which complemented the reception table.
"These are very special gifts to me," she said.
Although L.Dena has been involved with untold numbers of activities during the 19 years, her favorites are the outings she's taken with the residents.
"Some activities are double special. Like taking them (residents) out for a meal," she said.
Friends and residents streamed in during the afternoon to sign the guest book and wish L.Dena well during her retirement.
L.Dena said that a number of residents have come and gone from the manor over the years, but she's enjoyed working with them all.
"You just fall in love with each one of them," she said.
L.Dena said she was ready to turn over the duties to someone new. Her successor, Dalene Tharp, was already at work and directing visitors.
As for retirement, L.Dena said she has no plans other than to rest.
"My husband, Cy, has been waiting for me to be home more," she said with a smile. "We've been married 61 years."
