Labor Day weekend plans look interesting at Burdick
The Labor Day weekend at Burdick promises to be entertaining and interesting this year. It's the 31st annual observance of the holiday there.
A co-ed softball tourney is scheduled at 8 a.m. Saturday at the ball diamond. Bratwurst, hamburgers, and hot dogs will be served.
Community church services, at 9 a.m., will be held on the tennis courts with the message brought by Pastor John Gerry. Rolls and coffee will be served.
The softball tourney will continue at 11 a.m. and at 12:30 the Diamond Valley High School 80th annual alumni reunion will be the featured event, to be held at Hebron Lutheran Church with a catered dinner.
Musical entertainment is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. and will include the Centre Singers directed by Lynley Remy and Kenny Roe; and the Redden Brothers saxophone quintet. Lee Remy will be master of ceremonies. Homemade ice cream served, later, from Hageberg's garage.
In case of rain, the above events will be moved to Hebron church.
On Monday the first event of the day, 7:30 a.m., will be registration for the fun run which starts at 8.
A bake sale is scheduled at 9, rolls and coffee will be served at the fire station, an arts and crafts sale will be held at the shelter house on the American Legion grounds, 4-H will have a concession stand on the Legion grounds during the day, and an art display, by Chase County Art Guild, will be on exhibit at the Legion Hall.
A moon walk, for kids, will operate during the day on the Legion grounds.
Kids games are from 10 to 11:30 a.m., sponsored by Burdick Hustlers 4-H.
Photos of previous Labor Day festivals will be on display in the Legion hall. They were compiled by Audine Strand and the late Helen Gutsch.
Robert and Eddie Hiebert will present a dulcimer concert from 11:30 until 12:30.
Lunch will be served from 11:30 until 1 p.m. by Centre FFA.
Alex Stuchlik and Family, polka band, will entertain from 12:30 until 1:15 p.m.
Registration for the pedal power contest is set for 1:30 p.m. on the tennis courts.
Parade lineup will get underway at 1:30 p.m. at the Burdick United Methodist Church and the parade will begin promptly at 2 p.m.
Homemade ice cream will be served, following the parade, at the Hageberg garage. Sno-Cones will be sold by Council of Clubs on the Legion grounds.
Pedal power competition begins at 3 p.m. at the tennis courts. Shoes are required.
Also at 3 p.m. the McPherson Youth Pipe and Drum Band will play and a horseshoe tourney will be held.
Parade prize winners will be announced and there will be a "washer throw tourney" on the Legion grounds.
The popular festival attracts thousands from the tri-county community. It is sponsored by Burdick Council of Clubs and Colberg-Smith post of the American Legion.
