Lady Cougars defeat Chase Co., lose to Solomon
In a game played Tuesday at Cottonwood Falls, the Lady Cougars defeated Chase County, 60-40.
The win was followed by a big loss to Solomon Friday at home, 50-27.
The girls had an outstanding first half against Chase County. They outscored Chase County 16-10 and 21-10. Three girls contributed one trey each, contributing to a 37-20 score at halftime.
Chase County outscored Centre in the third quarter, 9-8, but Centre led scoring in the fourth quarter, 15-11, adding to the wide margin of victory.
The team blocked six shots compared to one block by Chase County. They shot 41 percent from the field compared to 24 percent by Chase County.
Laura Klenda once again was leading scorer with 19 points. She also led at the boards with 12 rebounds. Jill Fenske provided five assists.

The junior varsity defeated Chase County, 43-34.
They led at halftime, 23-14, and held onto the lead to win by 11 points.
Shaina Makovec had a good night of scoring with 13 points. She was followed by Brittany Owens with seven points and Dani Hatfield with five.
Alyssa Luna, Gloria Belton, Chelsey Tajchman, and Selena Seifert added four points each and Teaira Turner added two.
Centre vs. Solomon
A trey by Raschelle Jirak early in the game with Solomon gave Centre a 5-3 lead, but it was followed by two treys by Solomon. The first quarter ended with Centre down by three, 10-7.
The girls continued to lose momentum in the second quarter, ending the half down by nine, 22-13.
After a trey by Solomon to begin the second half, the girls came back with eight unanswered points to close the gap to four, 25-21.
That was as close as they got. They were down by seven at the end of the quarter.
The final quarter was disastrous, as Solomon continued to pull ahead. Centre's scoring turned cold. The Lady Cougars compiled only four points in the entire quarter to end the game 20 points behind the Lady Gorillas.
The junior varsity defeated Solomon, 59-22. Brittany Owens had an outstanding performance, scoring 25 points including 10 two-point baskets and five free throws.
The girls led, 13-6, at the end of the first quarter and were ahead by 10, 23-13, at halftime. The spread increased in the second half with quarter points of 17-5 and 19-4, resulting in an easy win.
Others who contributed points in addition to Owens were: Alyssa Luna, eight; Alisha Barney, seven; Jessica Deines, six; Dani Hatfield and Shaina Makovec, four each; Chelsey Tajchman, three; and Gloria Belton, two.
