Centre High School volleyball team traveled Aug. 30 to Canton-Galva for a quadrangular to open the 2005 season.
The Lady Cougars lost to Canton-Galva and Inman and defeated Elyria Christian.
Most of the games were close.
"We played to the level of our competition," said Coach Yvonne Burhoop. "When we played a poor team, we played poorly. When we played a good team, we played well."
Burhoop said the team's biggest problem was hitting the ball into the net.
The girls lost the first game to Canton-Galva by two points, 23-25, and lost the second 21-25.
Top point-getters were Selena Seifert 8, and Kylie Burhoop and Alisha Barney, 7 each.
Centre was 22 of 23 and 18 of 21 from the serving line. Alyssa Luna set the ball 9 of 10 times, and Seifert set the ball 22 of 23, five for a kill.
Luna and Barney completed five spikes each.
The Lady Cougars defeated Elyria in two games, 26-24 and 25-17. They were 23 of 25 in team serving in both games. Seifert served for a total of 13 points, Barney, 7.
Luna and Seifert set perfectly, for a total of eight kills.
Klenda contributed 11 spikes and five kills. Barney had 10 spikes and four kills, followed by Luna with six spikes and five kills. Seifert had five individual aces.
Some parents thought the team didn't have a chance to score against an aggressive Inman team. But the girls played well, losing the first game by just two points, 23-25, and the second by five, 20-25.
They were a perfect 24 of 24 from the serving line in the first game and 18 of 20 in the second.
Seifert served for 8 points, and Burhoop 7. Luna set the ball 5 of 6 and Seifert 25 of 28.
Barney completed 12 spikes and three kills. Klenda completed nine spikes and two kills. Burhoop was a perfect 6 of 6 and Gutsch 4 of 4 in spikes.
"If we had played as well against Canton-Galva as we did against Inman, we would have beat them," Burhoop said. "The true test will be Saturday at the Centre Invitational. Then we'll know where we're at."
The home invitational begins at 9 a.m. in the high school gymnasium.
