Lady Cougars play two, win one

In dual contests at home last week, Centre girls won one and lost one. Their league record stands at three wins, two losses.

Centre vs. Tescott

Laura Klenda dominated the basket Tuesday in a match-up with Tescott, scoring 23 points, including nine baskets from the floor and five out of seven attempts at the free-throw line. She also was strong defensively, with 11 rebounds, two blocked shots, and two steals.

That phenomenal performance, plus a strong defensive effort from the team, was not enough to produce a win. Tescott had three players in double digits.

The Lady Cougars led after the first quarter 8-6, but fell behind by half-time 14-18. They continued to slide during the second half, with scores of 25-32 at the end of the third quarter and 41-49 at the final buzzer.

B team

In two quarters of play, Tescott defeated the Centre junior varsity 16-6. Brianne Stahlecker scored four points, and Jill Fenske scored two.

Centre vs. White City

Two evenly-matched teams, Centre and White City, scrapped their way Friday to a finish which resulted in a win for Centre. The frenzied play included 30 turnovers by Centre and 24 by White City.

The girls managed to outscore their aggressive opponents in every quarter except the third, with ending scores of 18-15, 31-26, 39-36, and a final 54-49.

Alisha Loveless hit a couple from three-point range and sank four two-pointers and one free-throw, for a total of 15 points. She also had three blocked shots. Stephanie Hajek added 11 points, including two from three-point range, one two-pointer, and three free-throws. She also had six steals. Laura Klenda was strong off the boards with 11 rebounds.

B team

The junior varsity defeated White City 25-6 in two quarters of play. Brianne Stahlecker scored eight points, followed by Kristin Mueller with six and Jill Fenske, five. Other scorers were Jennifer Arndt, four, and Shaina Makovec, two.

With an overall record of three wins, six losses, the varsity girls are seeded seventh in the Eisenhower League tournament and played White City on Tuesday.
