Lady Cougars win one, lose one

Centre High School girls' basketball team played two games during the past week. On Jan. 6, they won a home game against Tescott, 53-29. They traveled Saturday to Solomon and lost in another lopsided contest, 61-38.

A terrific third quarter in which Centre scored 23 points contributed to the large margin of victory, although the girls outscored Tescott throughout the game.

The hard-fought contest saw Centre turn the ball over 15 times, but Tescott gave it up 31 times.

The Lady Cougars were leading by just two points at halftime, 19-17. By the end of the third quarter, they were leading 42-23. An 11-6 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter resulted in the 24-point win.

The girls shot 36 percent from the field and 67 percent from the free throw line. They out-rebounded Tescott 41-26 and stole the ball 24 times compared to five steals by the Lady Trojans.

Laura Klenda was leading scorer with 19 points, followed by Raschelle Jirak with 12. Klenda also contributed 12 rebounds. Jill Fenske provided seven assists and Jackie Klenda had six.

The junior varsity easily defeated Tescott 46-10. Alyssa Luna led scoring with 14 points. Other scorers were: Alisha Barney, eight; Seifert, six; Turner and Dani Hatfield, four each; Brittany Owens, three; and Jessica Deines, Shaina Makovec, and Chelsey Tajchman, two each.

Centre vs. Solomon

The varsity game Saturday with Solomon was a turn-about from the previous game. The Lady Cougars had a difficult time scoring.

They started out with a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, they scored only three points in the second quarter compared to 15 by Solomon to trail 27-16 at halftime.

Both teams scored 12 points in the third quarter, but a 22-10 Solomon advantage in the fourth quarter resulted in a 24-point Centre loss.

Jackie Klenda and Megan Gutsch were in double digits, with 11 points each. Megan Gutsch led rebounding, with seven. Laura Klenda had three assists but was held to two points in scoring.

The girls shot better than Solomon at the free throw line, completing 13 of 18 for 72 percent compared to 19 of 31 for 61 percent by Solomon. However, Centre shot 18 percent from the field compared to 40 percent by Solomon.

Solomon led defensively, garnering 42 rebounds compared to Centre's 34 and 12 steals compared to seven by Centre. Solomon blocked the ball six times.
