Lady Warriors down Railers, 50-45 years ago
Marion High School girls' basketball team scored a major win Friday, defeating Cottonwood Valley League opponent Herington 50 to 45.
"We just executed our offense and defense a little better," said Coach Jerry Smith. "It's a great win for the school."
Krista Zogelman led the Warriors with 14 points.
Herington stayed closed through most of the first half, but Marion kept finding ways to pull ahead.
The Warriors were up three points, 16-13 in the second quarter when Zogelman went to the line and hit two free throws.
Later in the half, Marion extended its score to 24-18 on a bucket by Brandi Peterie, who finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Herington came back with a basket at the buzzer to make the halftime score 28-24 Marion.
Herington took occasional one-point leads in the third quarter but the Warriors broke a 38-38 tie in the fourth and stayed ahead. Maggie Powers hit a three-point bucket with 90 seconds to go to give Marion a 44-38 lead. They traded free throws, but ultimately Marion hit enough to seal the win.
The junior varsity won 14-8. Jessica Davis and Rebecca Savage led scoring with four each.
