Lady Warriors edged by Knights
In a frustrating loss Friday for Marion, the girls' basketball team was defeated by Sacred Heart by the score of 47 to 55.
Sacred Heart swept Marion this season, the only Cottonwood Valley League team to record a win against the Warriors.
Krista Zogelman led Marion with 19 points, including all six of the Warriors' points in the first quarter. Brandi Peterie had 10.
It was an exciting game, though Marion was down 6-13 to start the second quarter. Marion was down 16-23 at half-time.
However, in the third quarter, Marion got within two points, 29-31, on a bucket by Peterie, then tied the game on a rebound and basket by Emmy Bowers. The quarter ended with the score 31-33.
Marion stayed within reach of Sacred Heart early in the fourth, tying the game at 33 on a Bowers basket and at 35 on a score by Amy Tajchman.
But the Knights then started to stretch their lead, up 37-45 at the 3:30 mark.
Marion kept chipping away, using three-pointers by Zogelman and Maggie Powers to bring the score to 43-48, and to 45-48 on a Peterie basket with a minute to go.
But the Warriors were unable to overcome their opponents, who went eight of 11 from the free-throw line in the final quarter.
Marion junior varsity blasted the Knights 50 to 29. Bowers had 22 points, hitting 11 of 12 from the field.
Megan Moore had 11 points. Jessica Davis had 10 rebounds.
