Lady Warriors lose heartbreaker
The Marion High School girls' basketball team lost a heartbreaking contest Feb. 18 to Wichita Trinity, 67-73, in double overtime.
"We actually won in regulation play, but a bad call put us into overtime," said Marion High School girls coach Daryl Enos.
With around five seconds to go, the Lady Warriors were ahead by three and Trinity had control of the ball. Caitlin O'Dell was guarding a Trinity player when the Trinity girl launched the ball inside the arch and the shot connected.
"The officials counted it as a three-pointer, when everyone else — including the Trinity people — could tell it should have been a two," Enos said.
The shot then sent the contest into overtime. With .5 seconds to go in the first overtime, the girls missed a shot that could have won the contest for them.
"Then we just seemed to run out of gumption," Enos said. "Our defense during the entire game was a little sluggish"
The Lady Warriors put a large number of points on the board. "You hate to score that much and lose," Enos said.
