Lady Warriors lose to Ellinwood

Girls bow out in first round of sub-state action

Marion High School girls' basketball team finished its season March 3 bowing out of first round regional action with a loss to Ellinwood, 48-59.

"In my humble opinion we were the better team," said Marion coach Daryl Enos. "But we just did not play well."

The girls got off on a bad foot trailing by 12 in the first quarter, 11-23.

The Lady Warriors turned over the ball 27 times, only nabbed 16 rebounds, and managed to shoot the ball only 46 times, compared to the 60 to 65 number they usually average.

"Maybe we were just a little timid about success," Enos said. "That next level of play can be somewhat scary."

One factor working against the girls was that Krista Zogelman, one of their top players, was still not 100 percent after an ankle injury last week.

"Krista played well considering that physically she was only about 80 percent," Enos said. "But I think she gave all she had to give."

Overall the team was close to where they wanted to be this time of year, Enos said, but not entirely there.

"We threw a lot of different game plans at them this year and for the most part they did well with it except during the last 2 1/2 weeks," Enos said.

The team worked together well and had spirited practices for the most part, the coach said.

"I feel we could compete with most anyone in 3-A," the coach said. "One thing we need to do is have a plan that everyone buys into all the way. Some only bought into it part way.

"But once you have a goal in mind you'll do whatever it takes and get that mental toughness. No matter how many bad calls or whatever else goes wrong, the championship team always wins," he said.

The Lady Warriors will be losing three seniors this year, Kristi Zogelman, Heidi Zogelman, and Megan Moore.

"We have a pretty good nucleus coming back next year," Enos said. "they know the plays and we can polish what we already have. We won't be introducing a lot of new things."

The Lady Warriors end the 2002-03 basketball season with a 12-9 record.
