Lady Warriors lose to Hillsboro

Pressure may have gotten the best of the Marion High School volleyball team Saturday during tournament action in Hillsboro.

"We were ranked third going in and the Hillsboro tournament always has a high level of competition and good teams," said head coach Ginger Robert. "I don't think we handled the pressure."

In the opening match, the girls defeated Sterling 15-13, but then dropped the final two games, 9-15, and 11-15.

Getting back on track, the Marion squad soundly defeated county rival Hillsboro in two games, 15-5, 15-12.

Meeting Minneapolis, the Marion girls pulled out the win, 17-15, before sputtering out to lose their final two games, 1-15, 4-15.

"We got back on track with Hillsboro after losing to Sterling," Robert said. "I thought that momentum could carry us through — but it didn't work that way.

"They were like a different team," she added. "It just wasn't us."

The team is now 8-2 in Cottonwood Valley League play and 17-6 overall.

The Marion squad meets Council Grove at home Tuesday for Parents' Night.

The volleyball squad travels to Lyons Saturday for sub-state action.

Robert said she expected the Marion Lady Warriors to be seeded somewhere in the top four.

"I don't know that any one team stands out," Robert said. "Marion, Hesston, Ellinwood, and Hoisington are all pretty equal. But any team can be knocked out by another that comes in and is ready to play."

Seeding and match times will be announced late Wednesday afternoon.
