Lady Warriors take third at Berean tourney
The Marion High School girls' basketball squad returned home Saturday with third place in the Berean Academy Tournament.
The girls defeated Peabody in the opening game Jan. 27, 70-51. Then lost a heartbreaker to Sunrise Academy Thursday, 66-68. They defeated Goessel, 68-51, on Saturday for third place.
Marion coach Daryl Enos was pleased with the girls' efforts.
"I think we stepped up our play quite a bit," he said. "When we played both Peabody and Sunrise we were up against two good centers. Both those girls were six-foot plus.
"Both girls had their share of points, but Brandi Peterie-Shipman matched them basically point for point," the coach said.
For the most part, the Lady Warriors averaged 60-plus points a game, and Enos was pleased the girls "stepped up their shooting."
In Marion's loss to Sunrise Academy, the Lady Warriors were in control until the last 30 seconds of the game. The Warriors missed a free throw, then had the ball with one minute, four seconds to go. The girls tried to stall, but a Sunrise player retrieved the ball and tied it up. With 12 seconds to go, Sunrise had the ball.
"We stopped their guard for getting it in," Enos said. "But another one of their gals got a hold of it, made a wild shot and it went in."
In the final contest against Goessel, Enos said the girls got off to a slow start.
"Our girls were disappointed they weren't playing in the championship game and I think the Goessel girls were in the same state of mind," he said. "Neither team was playing where they wanted to be."
Despite the slow start, the Lady Warriors recovered for a significant win, 68-51.
Enos said he believed Marion fans got their money's worth during the three contests.
The Marion girls are now 8-5 overall for the season and remain 5-1 in league play. They met Centre Tuesday night at home, and planned to travel to Salina to meet league competitor Sacred Heart on Friday.
"Our one league loss was to Sacred Heart here," Enos said. "We hope we can reverse that Friday."
