Lady Warriors take week off after two wins
Marion Lady Warriors have a week off from competition after taking wins over two Wichita schools last week.
The girls defeated Wichita Independent Friday night, 41-39 in Wichita, then the home crowd watched the girls win Tuesday night over Wichita Trinity, 62-45.
Marion vs. Independent
The battle against Wichita Independent was just that, said head coach Daryl Enos, with the lead see-sawing back and forth between the teams.
Enos said the varsity played well, although they had some problems dealing with Independent's six-foot two-inch player. However, the Lady
Warriors placed a good, high pressure defense.
"She kind of intimidated us until we got over it," Enos said. "We got her in some foul trouble and she had to sit out for awhile.
"But she managed to get in four or five blocked shots against us," he commented. "But we shot well from the free throw line."
The finale came down to a nail biter in the final minute when the Lady Warriors led by two points, 39-37.
Independent got the ball with 30-some seconds to go. They passed it to their tall girl who dumped it in the bucket.
Marion got the ball with 18 seconds left and called a time out with 12 seconds remaining.
"We sat up a strategy to get a shot out, which didn't really work," Enos said with a laugh. "They got a shot out, but Krista (Zogelman) got up a lay-up for us to win.
"At the very worst, it could have gone into overtime," he said.

Marion vs. Trinity
Except for a couple of lulls where the local girls were a little off, the Lady Warriors played well in their game against Wichita Trinity.
"We jumped out to a pretty good lead and led by as much as 17 in the third quarter," Enos said. "We let that lead dwindle to seven early in the fourth, but were able to bring it back to 17."
The girls hit 46 percent of their shots from the field.
"All in all, it was a good night, except for that little stretch," the coach said. "It was a pretty good week."
Enos said all team members were "getting better" in their roles.
"We need to loosen up on shooting and put the ball up," he said. "Our defense is so much better than it was at the beginning of the season."
One area the girls continue to work on is limiting turnovers.
"Our goal Friday night was to keep it under 15," Enos said. "We got 16, so that was pretty good."
The two wins against the Wichita teams place the Lady Warriors' record at 6-4.
"We lost our first three contests of the year, so we've won the last six out of seven."
The girls will see their next action Jan. 27 during the Berean Academy Tournament.

A back-and-forth game in the early quarters, the young Lady Warriors led by only one at the end of the third. A surge of energy in the fourth quarter saw the girls bucketing 20 points to finish up with a 14 point win.
