Lady Warriors" win Centre tournament

Except for a one-game loss to Council Grove Saturday at the Centre Invitational volleyball tournament, Marion's fourth-seeded Lady Warriors swept undefeated from the first match of pool play through the championship match with Herington.

They played with confidence and ease and seemed to have a lot of fun.

The Marion team had a tough time with fifth-seeded Council Grove in the first match, winning two of three close games with scores of 15-13, 13-15, and 15-11.

Berean Academy, Elbing, which Marion played next, was no match for the Lady Warriors. Marion won handily in two games, 15-0 and 15-8.

In the first game with first-seeded Hope, Marion had nine unanswered points before Hope scored. Hope continued to gain on them, but not enough to win the game. The score was Marion 15 Hope 12.

The score was 14-7 in Marion's favor in the second game when Marion and Hope exchanged balls for several minutes before Marion got the final point to win the game 15-7.

Having won their pool, the Lady Warriors went on to play second-seeded Hillsboro in the semi-finals. With great front line blocking and spiking, Marion defeated Hillsboro in the first game, 15-4.

Things got more serious during the second game, which proved to be a lot closer. Marion came from behind to tie the game at 8 all, then went on to win by a score of 15-9.

They faced third-seeded Herington in the championship match. The first game was relatively easy, with the Lady Warriors coming out on top, 15-5. The second game was much closer. A 15-15 tie near the end of the game required Marion to score another two points to win the game, which they did, 17-15.

Council Grove defeated Hillsboro in two games to win the consolation match with scores of 15-10 and 15-4.

Named to the all-tournament team were: Ashley Hatterman, Herington; Charity Davis, Hillsboro; Laura Klenda, Centre; Jenna Haire, Herington; Brandi Peterie, Marion; and Amy Bowen, Council Grove.

The Lady Warriors now are 8-2 on the season, 2-2 in conference play.
