Lake

I can finally report that some crappie were caught in the heated dock! A couple of ladies from Wichita caught several nice ones inside Friday, using minnows. They also caught a nice walleye. After seeing what they caught, June Jost came up and bought some minnows to give it a try, too. Kenny Schmidt has been catching a few, but mostly on the outside. They continue to catch nice channel cat out of the dock and around the lake, best bait being BJ, and dip cheese bait.
We had a small bass tournament from Emporia Saturday, but we weren't here when they came in around 2 p.m. so don't know what they caught.
What a beautiful ceremony it was Saturday! Thanks to Helen and Dwight Beckham for all the work they did to make it memorable day, and thanks also to Chat and Dine members for all the work they did in helping out. (We especially thank the seagulls for their fly over at just the right time, it couldn't have been planned any better.) To hear the CCC gentlemen tell their stories was great. Our son, Dean was really impressed by them and spent time talking to most of them after the ceremony. They almost are a lost generation with all of them in their 80s, and what is surprising is that most people don't know what CCC stands for or what they did. ( It should have been a mandatory history lesson for all high school-aged kids to attend.)
The day was topped off by a delicious meal served by Chat and Dine, and again we heard stories from three Marion County CCC workers Bill Holdeman, Raymond Oursler, and Paul Williams. They all thought they would be working somewhere in Kansas but all were sent out of state to work. They all worked for $25 a month, and got to keep $5 while $20 was sent home to their parents.
My sister, Virginia Gettinger from Overbrook, came down Saturday to attend the ceremony with us. She stayed over and returned home after we attended church Sunday morning. Leann Lewman from Sedgwick, Dean Snelling, and Julie Aycock, Mercedes and Madison from Newton also came for the afternoon.
Sunday evening we attended Tristen Snelling's birthday party. Others attending were Ken and Marge Sandwell, Tammy's sister Kathy and family, Sherry Hess, Jayde, Karly, Molly, and Emmy, Dean, Julie, Mercedes, and Madison.
I turned on the furnace this week just to blow out the cobwebs. Gosh I don't want to think about cold weather yet. I hope it at least stays in the upper 70s for a while.
