Lake: Best fish caught in early morning

Thanks to all who came by to pick up trash bags. That helps the pile of boxes go down.

Fishing still is slow, but I will include a picture of crappie that were caught by two fishermen early one morning. The smallest weighed 3/4 pound and the largest weighed two pounds. They left some for us and they sure did taste good!!!

The best time of day to fish still is early morning, like 3 to 4 a.m. until sunrise. But a fellow from Burlingame has come two different days and he caught 35 one afternoon and 20 another, so it's really hard to tell a good time to fish. One man fishes with glow jigs and swears by them, others use minnows, others spikes or meal worms. So, good luck!

We left Thursday morning for a few days off. We picked up my sister, Virginia Gettinger in Overbrook, then traveled on to Breckenridge, Mo., to visit sister, Genie and Ed Prothman and daughter Cindy Hubbard. We went especially to attend the Broadway show, "Miss Saigon," that was showing in downtown Kansas City.

Of course the weather didn't cooperate. Parts of Kansas City had 2 to 3 inches of rain the night before and it was sleeting and snowing Saturday with the possibility of 4 to 8 inches of snow. We were going to the afternoon show, so we tested the roads out beforehand and started out. By the time we got to I-35 and turned south, we ran out of the snow.

We got into Kansas City an hour early so we checked out where we were to go, then went sightseeing. Both of my sisters went to school and had lived in Kansas City years ago, so driving around and trying to find places that aren't there anymore and ones that were still there was fun. I must confess I was a little nervous being in downtown K.C. with all those people (the lawn and flower show was downtown, too) and us being on high alert. But all went well.

The show was fantastic and people- watching was fun, too. They didn't land a real helicopter on stage like in New York, but their video with sound was just as real. By the time we got out of the show it had started to flurry a little and the further north we went the worse it got. By the time we turned east on U.S.-36 highway it was blowing snow and visibility was getting bad. Several cars were in the ditch, but our good driver Cindy got us home safe and we were glad to be in out of the weather and in front of the fireplace with a hot cup of tea! We returned home Sunday afternoon.

Virginia and I are race fans and didn't want to miss the Daytona 500, but as it turned out, it wasn't much of a race with the rain they had. That's all of our exciting weekend.

The eagles still are hanging around. There were two of them across from the beach this morning. They sit for a while, then fly around and over the geese just to make them nervous, I think.
