Lake: Watch out for cracks in the ground

By TOOTSIE SNELLING

It's looking like rain this morning (Monday). We'll have to keep our fingers crossed. We need it so bad. You have to watch the cracks in the ground so you won't fall in. I talked to my brother in Florida yesterday and he said it rained inches there everyday. I told him to send some up here.

We did have a few campers out over the weekend and some that stayed all week with kids and grandkids. The fishing is a little better, mainly because we had some fishermen out.

The bigger channel cat are biting again. We had one report of up to 12 pounds, so that means they must be through spawning. The best bait is still chicken liver, Sonny's sponge bait, or the new Garlic BJ.

The boat bass fishermen are catching a few black bass. There are scattered reports of walleye and wipers, too. Still no crappie to speak of, just a few off of the heated dock now and then.

The hall was busy over the weekend with family reunions. The Hajeks used it on Saturday and had a big crowd. Chat and Dine used it Saturday evening. On Sunday the Pankratz and Bechelmeyer families used it. They also had big crowds. The Klines used a shelter house on Saturday for their reunion and picnic.

I participated in the Relay for Life in Hillsboro Friday night. I was on the Wheeler Memorial Walkers team. Team member Margie Sandwell won the roving trophy for raising the most money and our team won the trophy for most money raised. Good job, gals and guys! Participation was down this year. I don't know what must be done to get more people to come and join in. It's such a worthy cause and it's a good place to spent the evening. You can visit with people, enjoy the beautiful night time air, listen to Gene Winkler's good music, win prizes, and exercise all at the same time. Some people bring their grills and do their supper. Some brought tents and made a night of it.

It doesn't seem like it's time for school to start again. Where has the summer gone? Everyone is out buying school supplies and clothes. Seems strange to go to the stores and see fall and winter clothes when it's 100 degrees, but I suppose next we'll be complaining it's so cold!

I'm going to Breckenridge, Mo., for a couple of days this week to visit my sister. Have a good week.
