Landfill excavation work to start June 27 years ago
Jack Chappelle, the county's consultant for closing the former landfill, reported Monday to Marion County Commission the start date for the closing project could not begin until June 27. The commission approved the date change.
The contractor who was awarded the bid for the project, Unruh Excavating of Moundridge, cannot begin the project at the time originally planned due to current projects, Chappelle said. He said there would be no other extensions considered for the start of the project.
Chappelle also reviewed the county's obligations regarding Kansas Department of Health and Environment requirements for landfill closure.
The requirements included gas and ground water monitoring, and designation of a testing laboratory.
County environmental health director David Brazil said he may be able to collect the necessary samples which would save the county some money.

— Brazil reported a grant for recycling equipment is not available this year. Commissioner Randy Dallke asked if the county had a recycling plan. County clerk Carol Maggard said the previous commission did not support a recycling program and grant application.
Recycling equipment and location could be established, Brazil said. He said Harvey County has mandatory recycling with curbside service. He suggested the county consider providing a trailer and individual cities provide collection and sorting services.
Without grant funds, the project isn't feasible.
Commissioner Dan Holub said he was not in favor of charging residents for recycling.
