Larry Burkholder
Larry J. Burkholder, 61, died Sept. 8, 2003, at Newton. Affectionately known to friends and family as "Jack," he was born April 18, 1942, in Marion to Marvin "Mac" and Ruby (Pierce) Burkholder.
He attended Marion schools, graduating from high school in 1960. He and Carol (Kline) Burkholder were married Dec. 8, 1962. They had three daughters, Leslie, Tracy, and Stephanie.
A long time Marion resident, he co-owned and operated B&L Conoco with his brother, Bill, from 1965 until 1981. He was an employee of AMPI in Hillsboro for 17 years and Marion Manufacturing from 1998-2002.
An avid sports fan, he enjoyed Chiefs football and Royals baseball, but his real love was KU basketball. He also enjoyed bowling as well as fishing trips with his brother, Don.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents as well as his two brothers, Don and Bill. Survivors include his sister, Nancy Serpico of Edisto, S.C.; daughters, Leslie Turk and husband Bill of Newton, Tracy Reid and husband Kevin of Maize, and Stephanie McLain and husband Larry of Shawnee; seven grandchildren; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at Eastmoor United Methodist Church with Pastor Rick Branson officiating.
Greg Carlson was vocal soloist and Anita Brookens the organist.
Casket bearers were Monty Frazier, Jeff Burkholder, Jerry Burkholder, Lloyd Sklenar, Kevin Burkholder, and David McGarrigle.
Honorary bearers were Bud Kelsey, Gerald Kelsey, Bill Turk, Mike McGarrigle, Warren Vogel, Larry McLain, Kevin Reid, and Danny McGarrigle.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas.
Burial was in Marion Cemetery.
