Many will go to the polls next week without a clue about issues, candidates, or information. Since they aren't prepared, their vote is likely to do more harm than good. While your newspaper publisher is not attempting to tell you how to vote, this is an attempt to help you become better informed on candidates and issues. Don't cast a straight ticket, there's good reason to cross party lines.

Tim Shallenburger might make a good governor, but won't get the opportunity. He's too closely affiliated with the controversial "pro choice" issue, gun control, and other highly conservative stands. Kansans are wary of a guy who says he'll fund education and cut taxes. That's why they'll vote for Democrat Kathleen Sebelius who is moderate like most Kansas Republicans.

There's a wide difference between candidates for attorney general. One is a politician who let his law license lapse three times and has little experience as a lawyer. The other candidate, a Democrat from Junction City is highly regarded as a prosecutor. Cast your vote for Chris Biggs. Don't be fooled by Phill Kline.

Certain offices we take for granted, like Roberts for Senate, Moran for House, and Thornburgh to continue as Secretary of State.

Sandy Praeger would be a good insurance commissioner. I've worked with her as a senator and found her to be able. The Democrat, Garner, is unknown to me.

Lynn Jenkins, the Republican, is a CPA who could handle the job of state treasurer. Sally Finney's credentials seem to be that she's the daughter of a former governor.

For State Board of Education we strongly urge that you support Val DeFever whose name is NOT on the ballot. We hope you will write it in, for the sake of improved public education in Kansas. The candidates whose names are on the ballot would bring more ridicule to our state.

There you have our personal opinion. We support two Democrats, three Republicans, and a write-in.
