Laura Ayres

Laura W. Ayres, 101, longtime resident of Herington, died Aug. 2, 2004, at Lutheran Care Home in Herington.

Born June 24, 1903, at Hope, she was the daughter of Jesse and Rosalie (Zollinger) Langhofer.

On Nov. 27, 1921, she married Franklin H. Ayres at Council Grove. He died in 1958.

She was a homemaker and clerk at Boellings Pharmacy for more than 20 years. She also worked at Herington Elementary School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church at Herington, serving as deacon, elder, and member of United Presbyterian Women. She was a member of Dix-Day VFW Auxiliary.

Ayres was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Jean Goodman; a son, Oscar Ayres; five brothers; a sister; and a granddaughter.

She is survived by two daughters, Muriel Ihde of Herington and Jessie Longhofer of Granbury, Texas; a brother, Alden Langhofer of Wichita; a sister, Selena Lay of Newton; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Saturday morning at First Presbyterian Church, Herington, with Pastor Victor Force officiating. Burial was in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Memorial funds have been established with Dickinson County Hospice, Lutheran Home, and First Presbyterian Church.
