Leaks are repaired in swimming pool

Airport improvements include new runway lights; taxi-way lights will be replaced later

Marion City Commission heard Monday the city's swimming pool continues to be in need of repair.

Harvey Sanders, public utilities director, told the commission there are leaks in the metal pool due to rust.

"The holes will be repaired with fiberglass," reported Sanders. "The metal is too thin to weld."

Sanders said the holes varied in size from as big around as his finger to half dollar size.

Sanders also had some good news for the commission. Airport improvements are continuing with the completion of the installation of new lights on the runway. The taxi-way lights will be replaced at a later date. Asphalt will be laid in April.

Trees need to be removed along the dike before mowing begins. Sanders said trees were left along the dike due to the recent high waters.

Roofs were replaced on the older water plant building and swimming pool bath house by city crews.

David Mayfield, city administrator, told commissioners a fire department grant had been completed and submitted.

The grant is for $24,000 with the city's portion being $2,240, if the grant is approved for funding. The funds would be used for bunker gear (fire-proof suits), wild land gear (suits for grass fires), SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) gear, and a monitoring device attached to a firefighter's air pack in case firefighter becomes disabled in a building.

Recipients of the grant will be announced prior to Dec. 31.
